Georgia, a country in the Caucasus region between Europe and Asia, has loads of nature, a rich history, a vibrant and friendly culture, and the freshest food. Georgia has something for you whether you’re a nature enthusiast, foodie, or history buff.
Where to Stay
Rooms Boutique Hotel Tbilisi: In the bustling part of Tbilisi, Rooms Boutique Hotel has luxury rooms with modern comforts, plenty of quirks and traditional Georgian hospitality. The bar comes alive after dark, and you’ll get a welcome drink to start the night. We enjoyed the charm of this boutique hotel and its fantastic location within walking distance from most attractions, so we could explore the city’s vibrant streets and landmarks without worrying too much about how to get there. It also has a sister property, Rooms Kazbegi, that’s equally as quirky but has impressive mountain views and a huge terrace you’ll want to sit on even in winter.
Mountainside Retreats on Booking.com: If you’re on a lower budget and want to swap Tbilisi for a nature escape, consider staying in one of the cosy mountain retreats scattered across Georgia’s mountains. You’ll get to wake up to panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and could enjoy a bit of skiing if you go from December to March.
What to Eat
You must try some Georgian cuisine, which is celebrated for its fresh local ingredients and vintage recipes. Here are two must-try restaurants in Tbilisi; one is next to Rooms Hotel:
Barbarestan: This is a step back in time style restaurant where you’ll enjoy the freshest, most delicious food and a history lesson on Georgia’s popular dishes. Named after Barbare Jorjadze, a prominent 19th-century Georgian writer and historic foodie, this restaurant has been noticed by worlds 50 best and has a menu inspired by traditional dishes with a modern twist. If you ask nicely, the waiters will bring an ancient recipe book to the table, which is the inspiration behind most of the menu. All dishes are prepared with locally sourced ingredients, and we enjoyed a few glasses of local wine that’s equally delicious.
Keto & Kote: Just a short walk from rooms and hidden along what looks like a closed road, this beautiful restaurant has homely interiors and a lovely ambience. It serves an authentic taste of Georgian home cooking that’s most definitely worthy of its mention from the world’s 50 best restaurants. From succulent kebabs to freshly baked khachapuris, we’d like everything, please.
Where to Go
Escape the hustle and bustle of city life and explore Georgia’s mountains.
Kazbegi: In the middle of the Caucasus Mountains, Kazbegi is a place for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Join a scenic hike over towering peaks, visit the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church perched on a hilltop, and enjoy views of Mount Kazbek. Whether trekking through greenery or taking pics from one of the many viewpoints, Kazbegi is a great experience outside the city. It’s around a 3-hour drive from Tbilisi, and you can get some good deals on day trips.
What to See
Georgia has plenty of history and landmarks, and Visit Georgia lists them all, including the National Botanical Gardens.
National Botanical Gardens: On the outskirts of Tbilisi, the Gardens have a collection of plants from around the world that are in full bloom during the summer months. On your way in, stroll through lush gardens, admire the exotic plants, and enjoy a view of the iconic Mother of Georgia Statue. Whether you’re a plant enthusiast or enjoy escaping the city, this is a budget-friendly activity best enjoyed with a picnic.
