The simple things matter; some of ours are nature, loved ones, and light exercise so we’ve combined them all and found the best places to enjoy a picnic and activities. Whether you live in the UAE or are just visiting, explore these picnic spots, which are perfect for experiencing the UAE’s pockets of nature, often forgotten when the towering skyscrapers and dazzling hospitality scene are the focus in Dubai.
Hatta Dam
Tucked away in the Hajar Mountains, Hatta Dam is a popular place for active residents looking to escape the city as it’s close to Dubai and has loads to do. There are plenty of hiking routes around the dam courtesy of Visit Hatta that vary in elevation, and offers kayaking and paddle boarding if you’re into water sports. It’s not just a picnic spot but a fun-filled day out that you can make your own.
Driving Distance from Dubai: 1.5 Hours | Bus: AED 25 from Dubai Mall to Hatta Bus Station from 7 am – 7 pm between both destinations. When you arrive at Hatta bus station, get a second shuttle bus to the Dam for AED 2.
Sir Bani Yas Island
Located off the coast of Abu Dhabi, this natural reserve that has stunning beaches and lots of wildlife. On the island, you can enjoy a real escape to nature and picnic with grazing Arabian oryx and gazelles after a relaxing walk on the beach overlooking the sea. Driving Distance from Dubai: 3.5 Hours – Take the famous Sheikh Zayed Road or E11 highway from Abu Dhabi or Dubai, drive towards Tarif and Mirfa and take Exit 113 for Sir Bani Yas Island. The Jebel Dhana Jetty for the Sir Bani Yas Island ferry is almost two hours from downtown Abu Dhabi. Park the car at the jetty and hop on a complimentary speed boat.
Al Qudra Lakes
It’s not often you think of water in a desert, but just a short drive from Dubai, the man-made Al Qudra Lakes are filled with plants and nature. You can set up your picnic blanket along the shoreline and enjoy a peaceful day, with the chance to spot some birds that flock to the area during winter. Wadi Shawka
Most visitors aren’t aware that Dubai is one of seven emirates, all filled with different activities and things to do. In the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah is the beautiful Wadi Shawka, which fills with water in cooler months, making it a picturesque picnic spot that is also popular for cycling, running, and hiking. Located in the Jebel Jais mountains, adventurers can explore the wadi’s trails before settling down for a picnic, surrounded by stunning mountain views. Al Dhafra Beach
Located on Abu Dhabi’s remote western coastline, Al Dhafra Beach is a secluded retreat for beach-loving picnickers. This hidden gem is the perfect spot for a leisurely seaside picnic with its pretty white sands and clear waters. You can switch off, sunbathe, and swim in the sea while enjoying a yummy picnic.
